Birthplace of the April Uprising
On April 20, 1876, the first shot of the April Uprising against Ottoman rule was fired in Koprivshtitsa, igniting a rebellion that would ultimately lead to Bulgarian liberation. Todor Kableshkov's famous "letter of blood" was dispatched from the town's post office, rallying revolutionary committees across the country to arms. This single act of defiance transformed the quiet mountain settlement into a national symbol of courage and the struggle for independence.
Revival-Era Architecture
The town's steep, cobblestoned streets are lined with over 380 preserved houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period, their timber-framed upper stories projecting over stone ground floors in a style unique to the region. Many of the grandest mansions, built by wealthy merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries, feature elaborately painted facades, carved wooden ceilings, and ornate wrought-iron gates. Six of these houses have been converted into museum-homes that showcase the domestic life, artistry, and revolutionary spirit of the era.
Cultural Festivals and Traditions
Every five years Koprivshtitsa hosts the National Festival of Bulgarian Folklore, a massive open-air gathering that draws thousands of musicians, dancers, and singers from across the country to perform traditional regional arts. The festival transforms the surrounding meadows into a vibrant stage for bagpipe ensembles, choral groups in hand-embroidered costumes, and circle dances that have been passed down through generations. Between festival years the town maintains its cultural heartbeat through smaller events, craft workshops, and seasonal celebrations rooted in centuries-old traditions.
Natural Setting and Surroundings
Nestled in a valley of the Sredna Gora mountains at an elevation of over 1,000 meters, Koprivshtitsa is surrounded by pine-forested hills, alpine meadows, and the clear waters of the Topolnitsa River that runs through the town centre. The mountain setting provides cool summers and scenic hiking trails that connect to nearby peaks and villages, making the town a welcome retreat from the lowland heat. Stone bridges arch over the river at several points, framing picture-perfect views of colourful Revival houses against a backdrop of forested slopes.
