A Fortress for the Crown Jewels
Karlstejn Castle was founded in 1348 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV with a singular purpose: to safeguard the imperial crown jewels, holy relics, and state documents of the kingdom. Perched on a limestone cliff above the Berounka River valley, the castle's tiered silhouette of towers and fortified walls makes it one of the most recognisable landmarks in the Czech Republic. Its strategic importance meant that it was among the most heavily fortified structures of its era, designed to be virtually impregnable.
The Chapel of the Holy Cross
The crown jewel of Karlstejn's interior is the Chapel of the Holy Cross, located in the Great Tower and accessible only through a specially guided tour that must be booked in advance. The chapel's walls are inlaid with over 2,000 semi-precious stones and adorned with 129 Gothic panel paintings by Master Theodoric, one of the finest collections of medieval art in Europe. The effect is breathtaking, a glittering sanctuary designed to evoke the Heavenly Jerusalem and to provide a fitting home for the empire's most sacred treasures.
The Castle Grounds and Approach
The walk from Karlstejn village to the castle entrance is a pleasant uphill stroll of about twenty minutes through a wooded valley, passing local shops, cafes, and craft stalls along the way. Once inside the castle grounds, visitors can explore the Imperial Palace, the Marian Tower with its Church of the Virgin Mary, and the Well Tower that once served the castle's water supply. The layered arrangement of the buildings, each level higher and more sacred than the last, reflects the medieval hierarchy of spiritual importance that Charles IV envisioned.
A Popular Day Trip from Prague
Located just 30 kilometres southwest of Prague, Karlstejn is one of the most popular day-trip destinations in the Czech Republic and is easily reached by a 40-minute train ride from Prague's main station. The combination of a scenic countryside journey, the dramatic hilltop castle, and the charming village below makes for a rewarding half-day or full-day excursion. Visitors often pair a trip to Karlstejn with hiking or cycling in the surrounding Bohemian Karst landscape, a protected area of limestone gorges, caves, and forests.
